In the winter of 2012, Yannis started to build the rehabilitation area that was completed before the season started in 2013. This is where the sick and injured sea turtles will be taken when they first arrive. Guests often comment on how small the tanks in this area are, but they are this size for good reason! When we first receive injured sea turtles, they will be stressed, scared and hurt. By putting them into small tanks where they can’t do much swimming, we hope to calm them down and show them that they are safe. Keeping the turtles in these small tanks will also help us to administer medicine and food without having to scare them further by chasing them around bigger tanks to catch them.
Once the turtles have gained their confidence back, and we are satisfied with their progress, they will be moved to the tanks in the Recovery Area.
