The loggerhead turtle in its natural habitat, Zakynthos

Click the Link below to have a read of Angie Aspinall’s account of volunteer Eco-tourism holidays with us in Zakynthos, Greece. She describes her personal highlight:

“Holiday highlight? For me, the holiday highlight has to be helping to rescue turtle hatchlings from a blocked nest. Without the help of Earth, Sea & Sky staff and volunteers, none of the hatchlings in the nest would have survived but, by monitoring the nests and knowing when there’s a problem (such as a blockage), team members are able to excavate the nests (sticking to strict guidelines). So, early one morning, we watched the excavation of a nest. There were 50 dead hatchlings and their bodies were stopping their siblings from being able to scramble out of the nest. With a little help – from surgically gloved hands – we were able to ensure that 20 to 30 of the strongest hatchlings made their epic journey from nest to sea. It was one of those life-affirming moments that stay with you forever and a memory which ‘makes’ a holiday.”

The baby turtle hatchlings swim off into the sea

Often our Earth, Sea & Sky Global volunteers are able to watch the baby hatchlings as they make their first journey from their nests into the sea. We check the nests after the eggs have hatched for any babies that have not hatched on time and monitor the success of the hatchlings for record purposes. This is an amazing experience to watch the sunrise and the hundreds of turtle hatchlings quietly make their way into the Ionian Sea.

During your time as a volunteer on the island of Zakynthos there are plenty of beautiful places to visit during your free hours. With the largest number of sunshine hours in the mediteranean, and some stunnign beaches and coastal regions to explore, your will have a great time in Zante for the duration of your stay.

The Blue Caves in the north of the island are a must to visit for any volunteers in Zakynthos

Just down the road from the Gerakas turtle rescue station and volunteer accomodation is the charming beach of St Nicholas with the idyllic white church of Agios Nikolaos perched on the rocky cove.

During your time as a volunteer, you can walk down to the church at St.Nicholas, the neighbouring beach and village

If you are looking for a peaceful time away from your homeland, with some volunteer work incorporated, then staying in Gerakas is definitely right for you. The rural accomodation location is set within beautiful olive groves and fields of flowers – a truly beautiful Greek island setting.

The beatiful region of Gerakas is characterised by fields of flowers and long sandy beaches

After the sun goes down in Zante, Zakynthos the Caretta Caretta turtles begin to lay their eggs – normally having finished the laying process by dawn. After an incubation period the hatchlings emerge from their nests at dawn, before people arrive on the beach and make their way to the sea.

After sunset in Zante the turtles come on to the beach to lay their eggs

It is very important that there is minimal lighting around the nesting beaches as the turtles follow the light of the moon to go back to the sea after laying their eggs. However, lights from tourist resorts have been known to confuse them and instead of going to the sea, they dangerously venture further inland.

The magical island of Marathonisi is about five to ten minutes from the shore of Laganas, Agios Sostis and Porto Koukla. Many toursits visit Turtle island, however we recommend that the island is left alone for the benefit of the turtles in Zakynthos. This being one of their main nesting beaches is a crucial location for the preservation of the Caretta Caretta future.

There are two beautiful beaches on Marathonisi. On the front of the island there is a large, sandy beach with a distinctly tropical feel. The white sand is matched beautifully by turquoise, crystal waters. Most would agree that this is one of the most beautiful beaches in Zante.

Turtle Island, also known as Marathonisi, is one of the main nesting beaches in the Med for the Caretta Caretta Turtles

Marathonisi island has no inhabitants or buildings as it is one of the major nesting grounds of the Caretta Caretta Turtles and is heavily protected by the National Marine park of Zakynthos. As a result there are no sunbeds or umbrellas on the beaches here and the National Marine park ensure that the beach is empty by sunset when the turtles approach to lay their eggs.
